Human remains of girl not seen since 2005 found in freezer someone picked up for free

Human remains found in a freezer nine months ago have been identified as Amanda Overstreet, a teenager who hasn’t been seen since 2005 but was never reported missing

Human remains discovered in the freezer of a US home have been identified as belonging to a 16-year-old who was missing for nearly 20 years.

Someone picking up a freezer for free at a recently sold Colorado home in January 2024 was shocked to unearth the human head and hands of a teenager inside. Amanda Overstreet was identified as the victim through DNA testing, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Neighbours suspected foul play, with one mentioning he “felt sick” because of the smell when they walked past, CNN affiliate KJCT reported.

“I walked my dogs past that house about once every day or so,” said local resident Jameson Perez. “Even just walking by you smelt like a mildew stench. It was utterly disgusting and it would make you sick.”

The sheriff’s office claimed Overstreet was presumed to be “approximately 16 years old at the time of her disappearance” and had not been “seen or heard from since April 2005,” according to the sheriff’s office. According to CNN, she was the daughter of the home’s previous owner.

There was never any evidence Overstreet was ever reported missing, with the “circumstances surrounding her disappearance remaining under investigation,” the sheriff’s office said.

“She was a child, she was 16-years old. She’s still a child,” said Wendy Likes, Communications Manager at Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. “The last record we have of her being seen is in 2005, we do not have any records relating to her disappearance.”

“The last time we saw the little girl was when she was on her way to school,” Perez added. “We were all guessing who it was [when they discovered remains]. We started thinking, ‘Had it been the little girl who was there?’”

Previously authorities had claimed the discovery was an “isolated incident”, ruling out a continued threat to the community. At this time the cause of death is not known.
